Reading Lesson, 5th Grade Student Teaching

LESSON PLAN FORMAT FOR STUDENT TEACHING (2012)
Kansas State University
Name: Andrea Stockwell
TITLE:  Cause and Effect                                                DATE: Monday 3/12/2012

GRADE LEVEL:  5th Grade                                                SUBJECT: Reading Skills

TIME FRAME:  45 minutes, 1:30-2:15
______________________________________________________________

STANDARDS:
Standard 1: The student reads and comprehends text across the curriculum.
Benchmark 4:  The student comprehends a variety of texts (narrative, expository, technical, and persuasive).
Indicator 8: The student links causes and effects in appropriate-level narration, expository, and technical texts, and identifies signal words related to cause-effect relationships.

OBJECTIVES:
The student will recognize cause and effect signal words.
The student will reconstruct sentences using cause and effect signal words.
The student will demonstrate knowledge of cause and effect signal words.

ASSESSMENT:
The students are completing a worksheet about signal words. They will receive one point for each correct answer. The worksheet is worth 10 points. I expect the students to score at least 8/10 points. This addresses the objectives because the students have to recognize the signal words to be able to reconstruct the sentences for the worksheet. The students have to complete an exit card worth 3 points, 1 point for each sentence. The sentences should be similar to: “This happened, because I did this.” “Cause, signal word effect.” I expect all of the students to get at least 2/3 points. They are demonstrating their knowledge of cause and effect signal words by creating new sentences with the signal words in them.

MATERIALS and TECHNOLOGY:
Smart board, note cards, pencils, and paper, compilation worksheet from http://www.readworks.org/lessons/grade3/cause-and-effect/lesson-1 AND http://www.resourceroom.net/comprehension/literature/signalwordsHP2.asp AND http://www.resourceroom.net/comprehension/literature/signalwordsHP.asp AND  http://www.resourceroom.net/comprehension/literature/signalwordsHP3.asp
Presentation from http://prezi.com/x_rtxvlf7ovr/cause-and-effect/

ADAPTATIONS FOR SPECIAL NEEDS STUDENT (S):
Students that are labeled as ADD should be stimulated throughout the lesson as they are completing tasks. If they become off-task or are having focus issues, then they will be ask to get a stress ball to stay on task. The lower level students will be monitored to make sure they are on task and completing their work in a timely manner.

BEGINNING OF LESSON: (8 minutes)
The students will come in and sit in their assigned spots. I will drop an alka-seltzer tablet into a vase of water. The students will see the tablet dissolve as it bubbles. I will questions them about what caused the tablet to fizz (hitting the water) and what was the effect of the tablet hitting the water (it fizzing). We will discuss how there are cause and effect relationships everyday we just have to look for them. Please take out your writing journals.

MIDDLE OF LESSON: (30 minutes)
The students will take notes on a Presi presentation about different signal words that go with cause and effect. The presentation will discuss what causes are and what effects are. We will discuss how a cause comes from an effect and how you cannot have an effect without a cause. The presentation will go over what the signal words are for cause and effect and what the students need to look for when looking for cause and effect. We will then do some practice sentences are the smart board using our signal words as a whole class. Then in partners the students will complete a worksheet with the different signal words. The students have to rewrite the sentences using the appropriate signal word. If students are having trouble completing the task in partners they can complete the task on their own.

LESSON ENDING (7 minutes):
The students will return to their home seats and fill out an exit card. On the exit card the students have to create three cause/effect sentences with a signal word of their choosing. I will go over what the exit card should look like, how many sentences they should have, and what those sentences should look like. I will remind them that they have about 5 minutes to complete this task and it is due at the end of class.

RETEACHING:
If the students are not getting the concept of the signal words for cause and effect another build on activity would be to highlight the signal words in a passage so they can see the words in practice.
