Innovative Learning Seminar- ISTE Standard 4 Project

The Professional Standard

Standard 4 (2008). Promote and model Digital Citizenship and responsibility

Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices.

Indicator

2.     Address the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-centered strategies providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources

Narrative

Description

The students I service are all English language learners who are below grade level due to language or undetermined learning issues. Since we are learning from home currently, I try my best to make sure they have equitable access to appropriate digital tools. On the school front, they do. Each student has an iPad with the applications needed for school, but some students have trouble connecting or internet issues. Sadly, those are beyond what we can control besides setting them up with a hotspot. My goal is to make sure that my students have the same resources that other students have and sometimes more so that they can learn.

The lessons that I teach are individualized for each of my students and are extra lessons on top of what their classroom teacher gives them. I work with student one on one or in groups of two to reinforce skills already taught. My students are in kindergarten and first grade so we are working on letter sounds and phonological awareness to prepare them for reading. The lesson I have demonstrated in the evidence is working with a first grade student on those skills.

Analysis

This lesson addresses the indicator because it is providing  students of diverse needs with learner-centered strategies through equitable access to digital tools and resources. The students use Zoom to connect with me to use the digital resource of the smart board application as well as other reading resources I bought off of Teachers Pay Teachers and alphabet cards. For this assignment, I'm focusing on the smart board tool since I created that lesson.

Reflection

In the lesson, the students interact with me to complete various tasks to engage in phonological awareness (the first page) or letter sound knowledge. The student in this example is working on the letter C and follows along. They use the drawing tool on Zoom to interact, but sadly there's not a way to save their writing on Zoom. I do try to write on top of the writing, but it's not always successful. The students love interacting via Zoom. Before we do our lesson we review the letters in the alphabet and sing a song about short vowels, but that doesn't use any technology.

Welcome!

Welcome to my teaching site!

I graduated from Kansas State University in 2012 and have a degree in Elementary Education, a minor in Leadership Studies, and a certificate in English as a Second Language! In 2018, I graduated with my Masters in ESOL from MNU. I am constantly learning new things in education and love keeping up with the latest technology.

Coming from a long line of teachers, the holiday conversations are filled with new teaching developments. It's great to be able to learn how teaching continuously evolves over the years. The best parts of teaching are when students find their voice and really explore in writing. Also, that ah-ha moment when students see how things work and fully understand what they are doing! I truly enjoy being able to be a piece of that puzzle. Please feel free to follow the tabs above to learn more!
